What is Presumptive Eligibility (PE)?

Presumptive Eligibility (PE) is a way for pregnant women without health insurance (or with limited heath coverage) to start prenatal care with a health care provider. Specially trained staff at a pregnancy care office or clinic will ask for basic information about  family and income, and for proof of your pregnancy*.  That information will be used to fill out a  form which will be sent to the local Department of Social Services (DSS). DSS will decide whether the pregnant women can get full Medicaid or limited pregnancy care benefits.**  While the application is being processed, prenatal care costs will be covered.

 * Your health care provider will give you a pregnancy test during your visit. Home pregnancy test results can not be used.

 ** DSS may need more information to complete the Medicaid application process and continue coverage.
